Speech and Language services for children
SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR CHILDREN AGED 0 TO 12 YEARS
Speech-Language Assessment
Do you have concerns regarding your child’s expressive language skills, their ability to communicate or their ability to understand when you speak to them?
A speech-language assessment may help ensure that your child’s language is developing as expected for their age or developmental level. An assessment allows the clinician to identify skills that are slower to develop or not yet present.
The assessment step is necessary before beginning any intervention sessions with your child, as this is how each individual child’s strengths and weaknesses in speech and language are established. In addition, the results and observations from this first assessment session help determine the goals to prioritize during speech-language sessions, at home and at daycare or school, based on your child and family’s needs.
All of this occurs in a fun, playful environment!
Intervention Sessions
Our speech-language pathologist helps children presenting with difficulties in speech, language and/or communication to develop their independence, their well-being and to become effective communicators in all facets of their lives.
Services are offered in the form of regular intervention sessions during which the clinician plays games and follows the the child’s interests to help the child make progress in difficult areas of speech and language.
Your child will reproduce the verbal models provided, use the tools that have been given to them and to parents (e.g. gesture cues), learn to understand words and instructions and become the best communicator that they can be. This is accomplished through play adapted to each child’s needs, abilities and learning capacity.
Sessions can take place in the presence of parents or alone with the child, depending on your needs and preferences. Parents will always be given an activity (or activities) to do at home, to help generalize skills to other settings outside of the clinician’s office.
